Scotland’s Historic Environment Strategy Highlights Role of Towns and Local Communities

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) has released the Year Two progress report for Our Past, Our Future (OPOF), the national strategy to protect and celebrate Scotland’s historic environment between 2023 and 2028.

The strategy is built around three priorities: tackling climate change, empowering communities, and supporting a wellbeing economy. This year’s update highlights how heritage is contributing to net zero, strengthening local connections, and driving wider economic and social value.

Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP) is recognised in the report for its role in exploring the heritage lens in regeneration. Working with Business Improvement Districts and through the 2024 Scotland’s Towns Conference, STP has helped shine a light on the role of cultural and heritage assets in shaping sustainable places.

Scotland Loves Local is also featured, with the National Trust for Scotland now accepting gift cards at 47 properties across the country, supporting local businesses and artisans while encouraging people to discover heritage close to home.

The report underlines the importance of heritage as a driver for Scotland’s future, not only in safeguarding the past but in helping to build thriving, resilient towns and communities. As OPOF moves into its third year, the focus will shift to collaboration, stronger evidence, and celebrating the sector’s impact nationwide.
